Dr. Sylvia Walker (July 18, 1937--February 6, 2004) was an activist and leader for disability and racial justice and rights. Walker was the Director of the Center for Disability and Socioeconomic Policy Studies and the Howard University Research and Training Center. As a blind, African-American woman, throughout her life, Walker combatted ableism and racial prejudice and was dedicated to fighting for equity for disabled and Black people. Dr. Walker was an assistant professor in the School of Education at Howard University, located in Washington, D.C.

She founded the Center for the Study of Handicapped Children and Youth at Howard University in 1975, which was later renamed the Howard University Center for Disability and Socioeconomic Policy Studies. In 1995, she co-founded the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD).
